Newbee on uv and many questions:

Wait a sec.....do you want that X135 lens to be able to focus to infinity?

If the answer is 'yes', then did Klaus tell you that he had modified that X125 so that it would focus to infinity on a Nikon body? Because in its native mounts, it would not do so. If you do want to focus to infinity and the X135 is not modified to do so on a Nikon body, then you need another brand of camera and possibly another mount adapter.

Also, some Nikon consumer level DSLRs have limited support for manual lenses. I don't know the details, but it is something to be sure to check prior to purchase.

That is correct, you do need a UV+IR blocker to shoot a normal image.

And you would need an IR-Pass filter to shoot IR.

Several possibilities are listed in the Filter Sticky for either of these filter types.

Andrea,

I never tested for infinite focus..I assume it does.

I checked the present arrangment of the filter, it seems to be fixed and there is no easy way for me to add a filter to block IR-UV for VIS photography (threads are taken, and filter holder not removable).

[this makes me want to just get D40 for simplicity]

the M42 to Nikon mount adaptor has "UV" hand written on it. there is a piece of glass (shrinking instead of magnifying) there, not sure if it is special to let uv through.

People here would be able to give better advice about the X135 lens, and better understand your description of it, if you had posted a picture of it.

The construction of the adapter (with the extra glass) indicates that your X135 will likely focus to infinity on a Nikon DSLR. The glass element shrinks/enlarges? the image a bit to give the Enna a Nikon register distance.

I'm sure that is a special kind of glass which will pass UV because Klaus would never offer a UV-capable lens that was not UV-capable. :)

Easy enough to test by simply mounting it on the D40X and focusing on something far away.

The D40 does indeed seem the simple solution. Unless you want Live View or more megapixels. Converting to broadband will always give more UV sensitivity even for the D40. But I understand wanting to keep expenses minimal! The newer Nikons have improved image quality so something in the D3000/5000 line would also be nice but would need conversion because of the much stronger internal filters placed into DSLRs these days.

Good luck with your camera decision!

And we would love to see the X135 lens photo. I don't have an Enna in my kit, so would enjoy seeing one.

Andrea,

thanks for the advice. now that the UV-Nikkor is out of the picture, I can afford to convert one. it is just that it complicates things to have more filters...and the possible difficulty of putting them on the X135! I have 30 days before returning so I can wait for 2 more weeks.

I am planning to start a new thread somewhere, not here since it might be buried here.

but I cannot link to outside photos? must be uploaded here?

Zach - I'm not sure why that is happening. I will try to check it out tomorrow.

Andrea,

I got errors saying it is against forum rules to link to outside images? I tried using both <img src=URL> and also

neither worked. so i assume everyone HAS to use the photos uploaded to here first?

Th staff is currently discussing whether to allow external image links. There are pro et contra arguments.

I would assume it reduces your bandwidth but you lose "control" (e.g. cannot delete the actual photo), but you can edit/delete posts anyway....i would understand if "official publications" should be deposited here because external links might die after a while.
