Andrea B.
Blum, A.G. (2013) Townsendia exscapa (Richardson) Porter (Asteraceae) Stemless Townsend Daisy. Flowers photographed in visible and ultraviolet light. www.ultravioletphotography.com/content/index.php?/topic/628-townsendia-exscapa-stemless-townsend-daisy/ Twin Pines, La Plata County, Colorado, USA05 May 2013Wildflower Synonyms:Aster excapus RichardsonTownsendia intermedia Rydb.Townsendia sericea HookerComment:When looking down from above, a flowering Townsend's Daisy almost appears to be the top of a blooming cactus because of its stemless flowers. It was a delight to come across ! The disc florets were not yet open in this specimen, so I hope to find another example someday further along in bloom. In UV the rays and phyllaries are very UV-dark against the moderately UV-reflective leaves with their UV-bright hairy surfaces.
