Need help with filter problem UV/IR

I think its also relavent to say what do you want?

Just take some great photos and work on the composition.

If you don't think its "crisp" enough, try stacking a S8612 on it to cut down the IR.

We tend to over think things here and love testing mode more than photography art time.

But that being said. You do have a good subject there. I see the IR leak in the 330C monochrome image. Stacking your UV pass/IR blocking filters and you will see the center of the flower darken. As will the leaves. It should also get "crispier" or more micro contrast if you want a better term.

But its also good on its own the IR leak is low and the UV signature is present.

That is a very good question , so a short summary:

Initially I thought I had made some stupid mistake, when the photos with and without the BP1 looked almost the same.

Next I realized I had been a stupid in a different way than I had thought, finding that the internal filter is the X330C and not the X330.

This lead to the question of the true amount of IR-leakage and if I could omit the BP1 and still get "almost UV"-photos.

As a consequence I tested the S8612 for IR-suppression, and the question was raised how good this combination was for taking a photo of a thrilling flower and not of boring landscape.

All these questions finally lead me to the tests which I performed today, and which will probably be the last photos in this thread

So, without further ado the tests.

Test 1 with Soligor 21mm on an overcast day, all same shutter (Spoiler: S8612 gets rid of the infrared, while BP1 doesn't):

X330C only (ISO 6400, 1/30s):

X330C + IR630 (ISO 6400, 1/10s ), IR creeping in:

X330C + IR630 + BP1 (ISO 6400, 1/10s ), IR not much reduced:

X330C + IR630 + S8612 (ISO 25600, 8s ), IR gone for all practical purposes:

Test 2 with El-Nikkor 80 with full-spectrum flash, all same ISO, aperture, shutter (Spoiler: S8612 makes it look almost like Baader):

Baader U (full-spectrum camera, just for a comparison):

X330C:

X330C + S8612:

Final notes:

  • Even though I've realized that the BP1 doesn't do much againts IR, I won't throw away the photos which I've taken so far, since the IR-leak is "acceptably" small for me for the intended use. However, from now on, I'll take the S8612, and in an emergency (e.g. fisheye with UV-transmission or similar lens which doesn't like filters) I might even use X330C alone, knowing about the effects, to get a UV-feeling.
  • When I have time, I'll use the Baader U for flowers, but I won't hesitate to use X330C+S8612, if I don't have the Baader with me or it doesn't fit onto the lens.

Thanks to everybody for the input and guidance, now I can go back to taking "proper" photos

Yeah, I think we can call this settled then. Honestly I think the X330C+S8612 is the best of the lot. Without color, the Baader isn't giving you much.
