Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA

Found along Camino Entrada.

Wildflower

Synonyms:

none

Other Common Names:

  • Palmer's Beardtongue
  • Scented Beardtongue

Comment:

This pale pink Penstemon has a distinctive golden haired exserted staminode curled under on the end. An additional point of identification are the waxy, grey-green, paired stem leaves circling the upper stem (connate-perfoliate). The length of the lobed lower lip and the stripes on the lip can be longer than the ones shown here.

Penstemons are quite drought tolerant. I have found 4-foot tall Penstemon palmeri flourishing on a dry graveled street median and shorter ones along the graveled slopes of Interstate Highway 25 entrance ramps around Santa Fe. This even during the current serious drought.

In UV light the hairy staminode is UV-black against a pretty false blue which is moderately UV-absorbing. The lip stripes are UV dark but less noticeable in UV than they are in visible light.

Are they related to 'Snap Dragons' ?

Yes, Snapdragons and Penstemon are in the same family, Plantaginaceae.
