Andrea B.
Blum, A.G. (2013) Balsamorhiza sagittata (Pursh) Nuttall (Asteraceae) Arrowleaf Balsamroot. Flowers photographed in ultraviolet and visible light. http://www.ultraviol...eaf-balsamroot/ Synonyms: Buphthalmum sagittatum Pursh Comment: All parts of this plant were used by Native Americans as a food source. It has a very lovely UV tonality with UV-dark disc florets and predominantly UV-dark rays with UV-bright tips. In our standardized colour format, the flower presents as yellow & blue. SET 1 Twin Pines, LaPlata County, Colorado, USA 28 April 2013 Wildflower Comment: An early bloomer at 7600 feet, this plant was found growing in a tangle of scrub oak (Quercus gambelli). This has likely helped preserve it from the mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus hemionus) who like to dine on it. While photographing it, I observed a great variety of insects visiting it - various small bees, a wasp, some beetles and a tiny crab spider.
