Album: UV Floral Signatures
Most bees and other pollinating insects can detect Ultraviolet light. Using a UV-pass filter on a converted digital camera shows us the hidden UV patterns in flowers which the bees might use as pollination guides. The dark areas in such a photo also indicate areas where UV absorbing properties of underlying floral pigments help protect the reproductive areas of a flower from getting too much sun.
