Everyday things that Fluoresce under UV

Recommended Posts

I thought I would start a topic where we could post common items that fluoresce under UV light.

It doesn't always have to be some cool crazy nature based fluorescence to learn something interesting. I saw the original post by Bjørn about tonic water and the Quinine compound so I had to try it out for myself.

Wow does it glow.

Please state at least the light you used to induce the fluorescence and more if you can.

Stove Top and Kitchen Cabinet

OK so maybe these aren't "fluorescing" but they are everyday things.

Depending on what kind of person you are, shining a proper UV light on stuff in your kitchen and other places, will either make you laugh or freak out.

Surfaces that appear perfectly clean and normal looking become scenes from an apocalyptic movie. This is way beyond the white glove test.

A very important note: While this may seem cool to do at home like I did here, it is not cool apparently to do when guest are over and your significant other is within earshot. If you want to be in the dog house for some time, bring guest over to your stove top or bathroom with the black light.

This stove top was pretty clean looking. I boiled over some pasta a couple days ago but for the most part--looked ok--in visible

Hmm, not so clean anymore. And just look at those disgusting pans--and to think I ate some eggs out of the big one this morning...yuck! :P

Note: As an experiment, when I tried to white balance the Fluor photo using the perfectly gray burners, the image freaked out and turned purple, I mean really purple.

Under Sink Cabinet

I would expect this to be a little dirty from washing dishes over it and such but ugh.

Hand out a pair of goggles with the beer. :P

FWIW, my kitchen looks like this too !!

I'm not sure dried water droplets count as "dirt" however.

Probably there is just mineral residue after the water evaporates.

Same for your cooking pans. Probably just chemical changes. At worst some residue of cooking oils. But we have to leave some of that on the pan so it will cook well without sticking, yes??

Re:cooking pans--Yeah I never really "scrub" my cast iron for sure. These shown never really get scoured down to the metal either.

Exactly--no scrub clean = no stick :P
