Wildflower

Synonyms:

  • tsuyukusa ( tsuyukusa): Japanese meaning 'dew herb'

Comment:

I have a fondness for blue flowers even if they are introduced non-native noxious weeds. The pretty flowers which emerge from the green spathe envelope last only a day.

There is an interesting orchid-like mottled pattern seen on the UV-dark staminodes and stamen in UV. The rest of the flower is moderately UV-reflecting. The lower petal seems a bit brighter than the two top petals. (Don't confuse the lower petal with the spathe bracts.)

In a departure from my normal practice, I'm going to go with Wikipedia on the reference for this wildflower. Their description of C. communis is one the most complete botanical write-ups I've ever seen.
