Polemonium acutiflorum Willd.

FI: Kellosinilatva

EN: Tall Jacob's Ladder

This is a medium tall perennial species of damp meadows, native to northern Europe and North America. It also sees use as an ornamental plant. Its external appearance is akin to the more common P. caeruleum, from which P. acutiflorum differs by having darker coloured flowers with more pointed petals which are hairy along the edges, and pinnate leaves with fewer leaflet pairs (typically 6 against 8-12 for P. caeruleum). They do hybridise to make the matters more complicated.

Plants photographed at Hamningsberg, Finnmark Norway 23 Jul 2013.

Ultraviolet light: Panasonic GH-2, Coastal Optics 60 mm f/4 APO lens, Baader U2" (Venus) filter, SB-140 flash.

The corolla of P. acutiflorum is covered with conical cells giving the flower a shimmering appearance in UV.
