Matthiola sinuata (L.)W.T. Aiton

EN: Sea Stock; Great Sea Stock

FR: Matthiole sinuée; Giroflée des dunes; Violier des dune

This is a fleshy plant of low to intermediate stature growing mainly on sand dunes along Mediterraean and Atlantic coast north to France and parts of Great Britain. Populations are declining and it is considered endangered in France and UK. It also has been cultivated as an ornamental plant in alpine rock gardens.

Specimen photographed in situ at Les Sables d'Olonne, France, 2 June 2011.

Ultraviolet Light: Nikon D40X, UV-Nikkor 105 mm f/4.5 lens, Baader U 2 " (Venus) filter, SB-140 flash.

In UV, petals show conspicuous venation and darker patches towards the petal base. Areas with conical cells add a shimmering to the corolla. Buds and stems are grey-haired in visible light and appear very bright in UV, so the flower themselves stand out from their background.
