The Smith Mine

Recommended Posts

The Smith Mine was a coal mine in Carbon County, Montana in the rolling steppe country at the eastern foot of the Beartooth Plateau. It was once a significant source of coal for the American market; during the second world war it also gained some sad notoriety when a gas/dust explosion claimed the lives of over 70 miners, the worst such disaster in Montana history. The mine closed in 1953 due to competition from cheaper sources, but the surface ruins can still be seen near the road from Red Lodge to Belfry. The picture below was taken near sunset, and there may be some infrared contamination of the brightest surfaces (as lit from the left.) The Sony A900 was used with the Steinheil Cassar-S and the Baader U2 filter. Exposure was at f/16 and ISO 100; display intent is BGR.

One can see that the mine was abandoned long enough ago that no modern paint was applied to the structures.
