[uPDATE]

This is a Cistus. Perhaps Cistus x pulverulentus 'Sunset', commonly planted as an ornamental. I should have recognized this because I photographed a white Cistus at this Arboretum --> White Rockrose.

***************************

Found blooming in Boyce Thompson Arboretum, Superior, Arizona on 24 April 2013.

This is not a Malva because it lacks the fused stamen structure.

The leaves look wrong for a Rosa, but this is a desert plant so who knows?

(The plant may not be an Arizona native, however.)

Is it a Papaver? The yellow structure looks wrong for that.

It may belong to the Poppy family. The petals are distinctly poppy-like in appearance. Rosaceae is unlikely because there apparently is only a single style.

A pity you haven't got the entire plant showing its growth manner and foliage.

I'll dig out what I have.

I also thought Papaver because I've seen that wrinkly petal look on my garden Papaver after the petals have just pushed off their enclosing "capsule". But the leaves directly under the flower seem un-Papaver-like.

BTW, this has nice UV-dark blotches. Never seen that on a rose, so we are headed in Papaver direction methinks.
