This sounds like something people here might enjoy playing with. My father sent me a Wall Street Journal article (behind paywall here):

But the original paper is in PLOS and freely readable:

All you need is a laser and the usual fluorescence camera setup. They describe using even a laser-pointer using the "paint with light" method.
