DaveO
Oldfield, D. 2015. Hypocalymma angustifolium (Endl.) Schauer x robustum (Endl.) Lindl. (Myrtaceae) Flowers photographed in visible and ultraviolet light. http://www.ultraviol...ium-x-robustum/ Maldon, Victoria, Australia29 June 2015Australian Native Wildflower as Garden Specimen CommentThis plant was bought recently from a local nursery but the existence of hybrids was not mentioned in Elliott & Jones. The paper by Rye et al. however stated “Strid & Keighery (2002) noted the existence of natural hybrids between the widespread H. angustifolium ... and a variety of other species ... including H. robustum.”H. angustifolium has flowers which are deep pink or white or cream, and H. robustum has pink flowers. nfoto
Excellent documentation of this plant, Dave. However, I wonder how a hybrid can have yellow flowers if the putative parents have flowers in cream, white, or pink? Link to comment
DaveO
That's what I wondered as well. I thought you would be interested in the Norwegian connection, the Journal is behind a pay wall so I didn't read it, only the article in Nuytsia which is open access. I think we might see what other species are available next time we visit the nursery. Does nectar always show blue fluorescence, if that's what is really visible in the centre? Does anyone know what compounds the fluorescence is due to? Dave Link to comment
