This gracious orchid, native to Europe and Central Asia, thrives on rich fens and damp meadows, usually on calcareous soils. It is an endangered species on the Red List due to human practice of draining wetlands for agricultural usage, and is protected by national law in most countries in Europe. In my country, Norway, only a handful of sites are intact these days and a regression in its frequency is seen all over Europe.
