This is a gregarious shrub, native to Japan and adjacent parts of Asia, and widely used as an ornamental bush. The native habitat is seashores so R. rugosa is frequently planted in dunes or along roads to bind sand and prevent erosion. The plant spreads by vegetative means and through rose hips which are long floating in water and will germinate after being transported by ocean currents. R. rugosa is easily naturalised in coastal regions or along roads and currently is considered an invasive scrub in Europe. It is on the Norwegian Black List of unwanted species. Measures for eradication of troublesome occurrences recently have been instigated by environmental authorities.

 

The Japanese rose flowers in late spring or early summer, and flowering sometimes continue until late in the season. Hips are produced in copious amounts, but they don't always mature in late-flowering stands. The large fragrant flowers are eagerly visited by a wide array of pollinators such as hoverflies, bees, bumblebees, and butterflies.

The petals of the Japanese Rose are unusual in this genus by their high UV reflectivity.
