A widely cultivated species, C. officinalis is frequently found as a garden escapee but populations usually are fairly short-lived. It flowers from mid summer to late in autumn, in fact often until the first frost or snowfall arrives.

C. officinalis has UV-dark disc flowers and the ray florets have a large UV-dark patch at their basal part. Thus, the general impression of a dominant "bull's-eye" pattern is generated. Under UV light, the little spider hiding in the left flower head becomes very apparent.
