This is a perennial Potentilla capable of extending up to 1 m tall, but usually it is smaller. It occurs on dry meadows mainly on calcareous soils and is native to most of Europe. In the Nordic countries it is introduced and mainly is found on road verges, fallow fields, and other ephemeral habitats. The flowers are found in open terminal cymes and are quite big, usually at least 2 cm wide. A lot of pollinators frequent them.

Material collected in Tara Canyon national park, Montenegro, at an altitude of about 1100 m.a.s.l. 22 June, 2014.

In common with a number of other members of the Potentilla genus, P. recta exhibits large and prominent UV-dark marks on the petals. Sepals are UV-bright on the upper side and UV-dark on their lower side, so buds appear near black.
