New guy: Johan

Hello! A brief intro from me about me. I'm a Dutch guy in his 40s living in England with 2 children, technology marketer by day but photographer at night. My main thing is macro (see http://extreme-macro.co.uk/) but I dabble a bit with other types of photography too. This looks like a very good specialist UV site, high signal:noise, just the way I like it. I know very little about UV photography, all I'm hoping to do is find a way to do UV fluorescence. Look forward to learning and hopefully one day contributing.

Welcome aboard, Johan! Glad to have you join our growing family!

I know that this site will be the go-to source for UV photography education, as I myself am a fledgling "UV photographer", and still have MUCH to learn. However, being here (although for only a short time, thus far) has already expanded my knowledge of UV photography by leaps and bounds!

Glad to have you here.

Welcome, Johan. UV fluorescence is always an interesting subject for all UV enthusiasts. Thus I trust you'll find discussions in this topic interesting and hopefully stimulating as well.

I've done UV fluorescence with either a blacklight (Sylvania) or a UV LED (365 nm Nichia torch). Both approaches yield good results although the Nichia torch makes lighting the scene easier. You need to work in a dark room and use a UV-blocking filter over the lens.

Welcome, Johan. I hope you enjoy the site.

There is a great deal of UV information which I have summarized in and posted in this section:

Stickies in the UV Stickies and Gear Lists

Those will help you get started.

For UV-induced Visible Fluorescence ("black light photography", you need two things added to your standard photographic kit:

  • a good filter which blocks both UV and IR and passes only Visible wavelengths
  • a source of UV illumination

And high quality eye and skin protection!

Thank you very much everyone! I've been eying this Nichia LED for a couple of weeks now but still doing the research necessary before jumping in and buying some items - it is reassuring that this UV forum talks about it too! Same story with the filters, I have a couple of yellow variants I'm playing with but there seems to be a good ebay man who can do me the more exotic filter(s) that I think I will probably need. Superb work Oleksandr, I wonder if I know you from pm.net at all.
