J. nudiflorum is a shrub native to China. It is found in many gardens, since unlike most other plants it flowers during the winter months (roughly October to March) as long as there is no strict frost.

This flower shows the frequently found UV-dark centre that is referred to as a bulls-eye pattern. UV-reflection of the outer petals is relatively high. So for a trichromatic insect the centre reflects mainly green, while the outer petals have a colour composed of green and UV. The latter can be illustrated in different ways. Below there is an example where green is either represented as human would see it (II) or as bee-red (I). Likewise, green+UV becomes either yellow (II) or bee-magenta (I).

Flowers were photographed in Bensheim, Germany, 11 Nov. 2013.

Images were taken with a broadband-modified Panasonic Lumix G1 and the EL-Nikkor 80mm/f5.6 at f11.

Simulated bee-colours II: Combining the greyscale conversion of an UV image (red) with the blue channel and green channel of a visible light image. The latter two channels were left in their channel of the RGB image (visible). Red was replaced by UV.
