This is a perennial species native to Europe and preferring dry soils with open cover of vegetation. Thus it is often found along roads, on railway embankments, and in wastelands. The plants are medium tall up to 0.5 m. Flowering occurs in mid to late summer. It crosses freely with its relative L. vulgaris where the two grow adjacent to each other and the hybrids are somewhat fertile.
