Selling via UVP

Recommended Posts

I have been abiding by the forum's principle of not allowing stuff to be sold on UVP, but I'm concerned whether this is to the benefit of members.

I have sold a number of UV and IR items on ebay which might have been of interest to UVP members, but they wouldn't necessarily know that they were available (although Jonathan did pick up one of my filters). And I'm thinking now of saying good-bye to my Cassar S.

I'd like to offer my equipment first to UVP members, and at a lower price than I will seek on ebay. But I can't do that. I have received a few items from other UVP members - but they had to be gifts. There might be a lot of other redundant stuf that they have that I would be prepared to buy.

Could we have a "For Sale" section on UVP somewhere?

I guess the reason why there is no such section is that UVP might come to be regarded as partly responsible if a sale/purchase goes wrong.

On the other hand, there is a members-only non-commercial section on photomacrography.net which is, at least formally, off-limits to dealers, although the distinction between non-commercial and commercial deals is not always clear-cut in the second-hand market. The members there are not as specialized in their interests as on UVP, but there is a certain overlap in their and our range of interests.

Maybe just mentioning the intention to sell like Bernhard did above would be OK.

Then further communication could be done after an exchange of email addresses via messages on the forum.

I have helped with purchases on eBay, when no direct delivery was possible, to a few members.

That is in a way selling even if I bought the items for another member, and gained nothing but goodwill.

What are the limits of what is OK to post on the forum?

Would a list of surplus items be OK if no price was publicly posted?

Maybe just a key phrase or word could be used and searched for. "Surplus" would work well I think.

Sounds like we are trying to get around the rules.

The best way that I can image that would be to have a post in the gear thread about stuff you found in your closet. With a note if interesting to contact you personally about any specific details. Then edit down the list of stuff you found as you miss place it into a postal box.

Don't list prices or give Andrea a headache about the site back door market.

But I am just thinking of the top of my head, giving my own personal opinion without any support from any entity.

No I don't think so, just making it more easy to write and find a published intention to sell

For non vendors the rules are like this:

https://www.ultravio...buytrade-board/

If I understand it correctly it would be OK to post a topic with the title "I have surplus lenses"

and list them in the text asking any member interested in buying to contact via a private message and finish the sale outside the forum by email.

Then there is no risk of liability for the forum if something goes wrong.

I'd be happy with a section where people can announce surplus gear and invite contact by interested parties. But ...

1) this needs to be a section dedicated for the purpose so people know where to look and don't have to search around for a post from last year

2) the site police oughta announce that this is aceptable and what the ground trules are.

3) it would also have to be OK for seller and buyer (or donor and recipient) to discuss and agree the deal using the UVP messaging system.

The Duty Officer of the Site Police (aka Andrea) has to step into this matter and make the decision. She outranks me.

I would be ok with a buy and sell section with a huge red flashing warning on every post that the Administration is not responsible for any advertisements, sales or discussion.

As mentioned in https://www.ultravio...buytrade-board/,

if you have something legitimately posted for sale elsewhere,

then you can mention it here on UVP.

We are a very small, non-monetized photography website so

I cannot support gear sales within this forum.

There are many other big photography + gear websites

with good sales sections, so Ebay is not your only option.

One popular place to sell used photo gear is on FredMiranda.com.

Sometimes referred to as a "sister" site NikonGear has a classified section.

As I recall the UV interest sub-forum of NikonGear was the source from where UltravioletPhotography arose.

There are likely a good number of UVP members who like myself migrated here from NikonGear and who still visit both sites.

There is still interest in UV/IR on NikonGear and I expect that might be a preferred place to offer such specialist items.

Nikongrear (NG) does indeed have a Classified board. Do note, however, you need to be a subscriber to use that feature. The membership fee is very modest though.
