This is a prostrate creeping plant native to deserts of southwestern USA and northern Mexico. Also used as an ornamental plant in rock gardens. The entire plant is fragrant and tends to be sticky.

In UV, the corolla of A. villosa exhibits large patches of conical cells and signs of iridescence. There is a UV-dark centre of the flower by and large corresponding to the visible bright area. Also seen are the sand grains that adhere to the sticky foliage.
