Salsola paulsenii Litv.

EN: Russian Thistle; Tumbleweed (pp)

This is an annual generally

Flowers are borne solitary in axils towards the top of the stem. Each flower is reduced to a membraneous perianth comprising fused sepals.

S. paulsenii is closely related to S. tragus L. and they can hybridise. Its status as a separate species needs further study. The studied specimen was identified as S. paulsenii by having the following characters: branches minutely papillate, leaves not sharply tipped but ending in a prominent spine, sepal wings > 3 mm.

Plants collected at Tucson, Arizona USA 12 Mar 2012. They were found growing as weeds on a vacant lot.
