Fouquieria splendens Engelm.

EN: Ocotillo

This is a small cactus-like shrub native to the desert ranges of northern Mexico and adjacent parts of United States. Its appearance is unlike virtually all other plants so the likelihood of misidentification is practically nil. The bright deep red flowers are pollinated by hummingbirds and local carpenter bees.

Specimens photographed in Joshua Tree National Park, California, USA 4 Mar 2012.
