Some old photos

I have a lot of photos taken when I started exploring invisible light. Here I will post some of them, but I will probably post more in the future.

 

They were taken with a Kevler KP-109 USB camera. I liked that camera since the lens could be completely unscrewed, and I could turn it into basically a microscope. The hot mirror was on the lens, so converting the camera to full-spectrum was very easy. The lens was made probably of plastic, it was good at 365 nm, and it had a huge focus shift between UV, VIS and IR, so huge everything appeared blurry if I didn't refocus. The camera didn't register any settings, such as exposure, ISO, etc. Also, photos were extremely heavy, basically uncompressed. I hope they will not be too heavy to load, tell me if there are any problems.

 

Let's start with infrared.

 

September 6th, 2018. Coke at 940 nm. I used a 100 IR LED lamp for this photo.

September 17th , 2018. Water at 940 nm. I don't remember if I used my 100 IR LED matrix or my 10 W 940 nm LED, but I probably used the former. I knew water absorbed there, but this surprised me. The experiments I did later showed that water wasn't so dark, but sometimes a combination of shadows and the refraction of water made it look basically black (you can see the background through the water bottle because of how light refracted, and if the background was dark water appeared black).

March 17th ,2019. My hand above a "10 W" 850 nm LED.

...now ultraviolet.

 

February 11th ,2019. Sunscreen on my hand. 10 W 365 nm LED (not the super powerful paper-burning one, but a common 9 chip one that is much less powerful using the same power (much less efficient)). I think I had ZWB2 only on the lens.

February 25th ,2019. First time I photographed a dandelion in UV. I think the setup was the same as before, with ZWB2 only on the lens and a 10 W 365 nm LED. This dandelion was the only one I could find around, I picked it up and tried to see the nectar guides. They appeared, but not as contrasted as I expected. In the first image you can see a "handprint" with sunscreen.

February 27th ,2019. UV selfie with sunscreen and eyes open. I now keep my eyes closed every time, but even when I took this selfie I only opened them when I clicked the button, and kept them close otherwise. Someone told me I look like a miner.

I tried to change the extension of one image into .jpg as an experiment, it worked, but the size (in MB) was the same. I need something to compress them.

 

...maybe if I open them in Paint and save them as .jpg from there, would this make any difference?

I can recommed IrfanView, a freeware which I usually use for quick resizing and converting

I searched in the settings, but I can't find a way to compress the images, although I love the channel swapping feature.

Irfanview is useful.

Under the File button is a 'Save for Web' selection.

Thanks colin. I installed the plugin and did a test. I will now run the heavy images through this and replace them.

I hadn't thought about taking images through skin above an IR source. Thats cleaver. I will have to try that out.

I am curious to see the result.
