Wildflower

Synonyms:

  • Desert Pincushion

Comment:

Desert tortoises (Gopherus agassizii) love to eat these Pincushions(2) which are native to the southwestern US deserts and Baja California. This is a discoid flower with enlarged, zygomorphic, lobed, peripheral corollas giving it the appearance of being composite.

The flower is quite dark in UV. When not caught in the shadows between two rocks as was this specimen, it stands out against brighter desert soil and gravel. It is difficult to say whether the UV-bright sparkles on this flower are pollen or simply desert dust particles.

Quite obviously I forgot to re-set the aperture after focusing at f/4.
