Yes interesting phenomenon, thanks for posting. "The brightening is caused by increased downwards winds which enhance the chemical reaction creating nitric oxide which causes the glow."

It is explained down the page. Mars does not have a magnetic field that protects it from the solar emissions (and creates aurora around the poles), a reason it lost most of it's atmosphere. Nightglow is present here too away from the aurora belt, but then at different (and then visible) wavelengths due to different chemical composition.
