A small spring flower native to Europe and found in alpine and inland habitats, often on dry sandy soils. At low altitudes it flowers in late April or early May, while on its higher elevation sites commence flowering about one month later. The flowers are cream white inside and hte outside is striped in pink.

 

Plants collected at Vågå, Norway 10 July 2012. They were growing on an upland site.

Ultraviolet light: Panasonic GH2, Coastal Optics 60 mm f/4 APO lens, Bader U2" (Venus) filter, SB-140 flash.

 

The styles and anthers are UV-dark. The honey leaves ("petals") are variegated with UV-darker or UV-brighter blotches due to the presence of conical cells.
