Seems like there is quite a bit of news regarding the new Capture one release. However the big deal for me that is not being reported is just like for Sony and Fuji cameras, Capture one express is free now for Nikon only files.

I still have to play around with it to see how it handles color.

But this link should get you to the free version:

https://www.captureone.com/en/products-plans/capture-one-express/nikon

This link basically explains what the free version is missing from Pro version, which you have to pay for:

"Free" as in give us all the details we require to pester you with future ads.

Free as in you get a license code and Nikon, Sony, or Fuji actually pay per licence given out.

With Nikon current state not sure how long this will last. So I got mine today.

Not sure if this will be the end of in-house Nikon developed software. This might be cheaper than working in NXD.

Has anyone else downloaded the Nikon version of Capture one express for free?

Today I got a link for 12 months free smugmug. I had bought Capture one version 6, years ago. So technically I upgraded, but I paid nothing for the upgrade.

Wondering if anyone else tried this and now got a free Smugmug account.

I already have one that I haven't edited in 10 years and is on my list of things to do for 2019. So I am late again.

Yes, I got it yesterday but have not yet had time to get started with it.

I was thinking that if I liked it, I might get the larger version. Although I am quite happy with Photo Ninja so maybe not.

If the pesky emails are bothersome, you can always hit the unsubscribe button.

I haven't installed/tried this yet myself, but after watching the quick start tutorial it appears to be practically the same as Darktable. And Darktable is free, without pesky emails or limitations.

Not really. Darktable uses a dedicated catalog interface just like Lightroom.

Capture one has the folder tree on the side, so you can directly access your files. Like ART or Raw therapee, which are both free and wouldn't email target you.

I also really like the demoisac options in ART/Raw therapee. Art is a recent fork from Raw therapee, that seems to have used the local lab beta code to allow for selective editing.

My favorite free software are:

Art now, simple well organized and very powerful.

Lightzone.

Raw therapee, for the few missing complex wavelet features missing from ART.

Gimp, I need to test out its recent fork Glimpse. Haven't done that yet.

InfranViewer I use a lot, to size files directly from my camera to post here.

I used to use UFRaw, but it hasn't been updated in a very long time. Excellent, simple raw processing program.

Photivo is also great and excellent for Sigma x3f files, but its interface can be a little confusing.
