Chalwatzis, N. 2013. Genista tinctoria L. (Fabaceae). Dyer’s Broom. Flowers photographed in visible and ultraviolet light.

Genista tinctoria L.

DE: Färber-Ginster

EN: Dyer’s Broom

This plant is a small shrub, usually less than one meter high. The entire plant is toxic. As the name suggest, it has been used to extract a yellow dye. Modifications with different metal ions can lead to other colours (green, brown).

Flowers were photographed near Bensheim, Germany 14 June 2013.

Images were taken with a broadband-modified Panasonic Lumix G1 and the EL-Nikkor 80mm/f5.6 at f11.

The banner appears UV-bright with dark veins, while the keel and the wings are mostly UV-dark.

Since in some Fabaceae species like G. tinctoria different parts of the petals become visible at different times it seems worthwhile to capture flowers in different stages, if possible.
