Coronidium scorpioides is found in New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania. Jacques Labillardière described Helichrysum scorpioides in 1806 from a specimen collected by him in Tasmania in 1791 during an expedition lead by Bruni d’Entrecasteaux in search of the lost ships of Jean-François de Galaup, compte de Lapérouse. Botanist Paul G. Wilson erected the new genus Coronidium for 17 species of daisy of the eastern states of Australia.
