A small spring flower, native to Continental Europe and naturalised in the Nordic countries, E. hyemalis gets into bloom while the last snow still may linger.

In UV, the styles, pistils and large nectaria are UV black, thus giving a bull's-eye appearance of the opened flower.

The outer side of the honey leaves are almost entirely UV black except for the very tips.
