Airplanes in UV

Recommended Posts

I was at Hatton Cross today and out of curiosity I shot airplanes in UV :D

It seems to me that the front of the plane seems to build up some sort of UV resistance (or lose?) as it was darker and more blue toned than the rest of the upper body part (which was usually white).

All photos were made with A7II FS + EL-Nikkor 80mm f5.6 metal version + S8612-1.5 and U360-2

Interesting. Those look really dark on my phone.

to not have them motion blurred I had to use 1/250 or 1/500 as Shutter speed... so ISO was all the way up to 6400 already. If I raise the ISO 2 stops more then it would be nothing but a noise fest. Also the paint they use is probably highly UV resistant which will render them dark already... so they are pretty dark plus I can not over expose to bring more shadow details... :'(

On the last photo you can see that generally the exposure is quite right, the white poles are well exposed, also the silver lining things on the planes are okay too... the planes are generally dark. So I suppose if you want to spot camouflaged flyers then you should look for them in UV :)

interesting! you must of been closed to fill up the frame (or maybe cropped)

at Hatton Cross the planes are landing, I have made some videos too, once I made the compilation and uploaded to YouTube I will share it here :)

Ooh, my wife says that the second picture is the only BA aircraft in the BOAC livery. It received the Golden Speedbird retro paint scheme to celebrate the BA centenary. She says now you need to go and spot the Landor and Negus BA jumbos and the BEA Red Square A319 to complete the set

She's such a geek.......

Yes, plane spotting is such an odd passion, not at all as mainstream and sound as collecting odd expensive filters and specialist camera lenses, suitable for UV-photography...

If I weren't living miles away from the Airport :P I heard there was one BA aircraft that never goes to Heathrow just Gatwick and this day it was going to Heathrow instead... but could not recall which one it was, or did I photograph it. I am not a plane geek but it really sounds like a fun activity if you live near the Airport. My son enjoyed a lot to see planes this close, so might go back for more an other day.

Ps.: I am uploading the UVideo to YouTube, as soon it's live I will post it here :)

That's great!! and photos and video! your photos are inspiringly beautiful)

I've been trying to shoot flying planes. no results, unsharpness. Inspired by your planes i will go try again. or at least i will shoot planes standing on the tarmac at the airport

It's a bit challenging in UV, as you need to use a relatively fast shutter speed (1/250 worked, 1/100 - 99% of the photos blurred, 1/500 if you wanna go for sure... so ISO has to be high)

What surprised me is that 1/100 for video was more than enough :)

Also setting the focus is tricky as the planes go really fast... so what I did is to see where I want to shoot them, find a ground object around the same distance and focus on that. Then just do burst photos and see which one is sharp :) Still the number of keepers were quite low, but I expected that so had about 100-150 photos for 10-15 good ones :)
