Blues (and yellow) in the woods

Recommended Posts

During a walk in the woods, where I used my new Convoy S2+ UV 365nm led flashlight, nichia 365UV to search for something I thought I had lost in the snow (clean snow itself shows hardly any fluorescence) I encountered an interesting piece of wood, although in visible light it looks like a quite ordinary broken off branch of a small tree. Captured with a non-modified Nikon D7100 and 55mm f/3.5 micro nikkor @ f/8, no filter on lens.

The following two UVIVF frames were lighted by a Convoy S2+ and a Tank007 TK-566 UV-LED to fill in the shade. Captured with a non-modified Nikon D7100 and 55mm f/3.5 micro nikkor @ f/11, no filter on lens. Daylight VB used and color temp. increased to ca. 9000K to get closer to the visual impression of the blue observed in the field:

(Just another variation of the lighting:)

Thanks for commenting Andy.

I wonder what causes this? The wood looks so clean, but it might be a while since the branch was broken off - it was in a debris field. Normally I see woods flourescence with almost natural colors. A more peripheral part of the same branch shows the yellow core, but not the blue.

(Here it has obviously been sawed off, but it was how I found it).

Thanks, they are from the same branch, just different ends. Looking at the cut now (I still have the the branch), it might have been bitten off by something like a moose rather than sawed off; there is a bit more depth in the blurry part than it looks like.

I got curious if the blue was just something at the surface or if it is how the wood itself behaves. So I made a cut, (in the first image, ca. i/3 to the left and towards the bottom of the frame) and half expected to see fluorescence in wood color inside. But no, it is blue straight through at that location.
