This is a medium tall, to 1 m, crucifer species native to Europe and Russia. The main distribution is eastern and E. strictum is not native to the British Isles. It does occur natively in Iceland, though. E. strictum prefers dry habitats and occur on rockfaces, road verges, urban wastelands, railway embankments, and similar localities. It flowers in June or July.

The buds of E. strictum are hairy and light up brightly in UV, while the petals is moderately to low as far as UV reflectivity is concerned. This UV signature sharply contrasts that of the related E. cheiranthoides http://www.ultraviol...tle-wallflower/.
