Chalwatzis, N. 2013: Orchis militaris L. (Orchidaceae). Military Orchid. Flowers photographed in visible and ultraviolet light.

Orchis militaris L.

DE: Helm-Knabenkraut

EN: Military Orchid

May, 18th, 2013, in-situ, near Bensheim Germany on a meadow (extensive cultivation).

This orchid species requires meadows that are not farmed/dunged intensively. In Germany it is endangered and therefore protected by law.

Images taken with a broadband modified Panasonic Lumix G1 and the EL-Nikkor 80mm/f5.6 at f8.

Visible light image with IR Neutralisation-filter NG, 1/250s, ISO 100:

The outer petals show a strong UV-reflection with dark veins at the inside. Other parts of the flower are much darker. There is some similarity between the visible and the UV appearance, but the contrast appears to be higher in the UV-image.
