Twin Pines, La Plata County, Colorado, USA

At an altitude of 7525ft near Durango.

05 May 2013

Wildflower

Synonyms:

  • Delphinium laced in family Helleboraceae by some authors.
  • Delphinium nelsonii

Comment:

This Larkspur has a very interesting UV signature with the two upper petals showing UV-black against the brighter sepals. The anthers are UV-black on UV-bright filaments. The spur is UV-black.

Key ID points for this specimen which distinguish it from D. barbeyi which also grows in La Plata County:

  • spring flowering.
  • open coniferous woods.
  • dry soil conditions.
  • montane zone.
  • lower petal blades elevated, exposing stamens.
