Maldon, Victoria, Australia23 June 2015Australian Native Wildflower as Garden Specimen CommentEucalyptus globulus subsp. globulus is distributed mainly in south-eastern Tasmania and the Otway Ranges and Wilson’s Promontory in Victoria. It is widely planted in Western Victoria as a source of woodchips for paper production. The most striking feature of the UV images was the UV-white reflection from the outside of the un-opened buds, which corresponded to a visible light blue-green (turquoise?) colour. The buds are described as "glaucous" which means covered with a white wax. According to Wiki "Epicuticular wax can reflect UV light, such as the white wax coating of "Dudleya brittonnii" which has the highest UV reflectivity of any known biological substance". That seems to nail it!
