Andrea B.

Recommended Posts

A short list of some flowers which have classic UV-signatures for use as test patterns and are available from grocery stores or bedding plant vendors - or grow wild in our gardens or lawns.

Will members from other continents please add their recommendations?

CLASSIC UV-BULLSEYE

Of these, Dandelions and Sunflowers are most easily found.

Beggarticks/Bidens :: Bidens ferulifolia

Annual bedding plant.

Black-eyed Susan :: Rudbeckia hirta, R. fulgida, R. triloba.

Grows wild in some locations.

Popular, perennial bedding plant.

Often seen in public gardens.

Butter Daisy, Blackfoot Daisy :: Melampodium paludosum (alias M. diverticarum)

Annual bedding plant.

Creeping Zinnia :: Sanvitalia procumbens

Annual bedding plant.

Cultivar 'Sunbini' is often seen in public gardens.

Dandelion :: Taraxacum officinale

A spring-blooming weed to most folks. But so pretty in UV.

Blooms in spring in lawns, gardens and other areas with disturbed soil.

Mexican Zinnia :: Zinnia haageana

Other zinnias may not exhibit a patterned UV-signature.

Annual bedding plant.

Sunflower :: Helianthus sp.

Grows wild in some locations.

Easy to grow from seed.

Sold by flower vendors in grocery stores or florist shops.

FALSE BI-COLOUR

Harder to find in public gardens, but they are very cool in UV.

Danford's Iris, Dwarf Iris :: Iris danfordiae

Spring bloomer.

Jerusalem Sage :: Phlomis fruticosa

Perennial, shrub-like.

Seen more often now in public gardens.

Yellow Flag, Yellow Water Iris :: Iris pseudacorus

Grows in water.
