Wildflower

Synonyms:

  • Euphrasia americana Wettst.
  • Euphrasia canadensis, in the sense of Fernald
  • Euphrasia officinalis L. var. nemorosa Pers.

Comment:

Key points of identification for E. nemorosa are the non-ascending planarity of the bristle-tipped leaves relative to the stem and the slightly spreading, but non-ascending leaf tips. Flower colour can vary on the same plant, apparently with age.

The Euphrasia genus is one of those interesting semi-parasitic groups which can feed on nearby grasses with their elaborate root structure but can still practice photosynthesis as needed.

In Ultraviolet light the lower flower lip has a distinct UV-black blotch emanating in pointed rays from the throat. The UV-dark rays track the Visible dark lines on the flower. The UV-dark central area lies against a moderately UV-dark petal background. The reproductive parts in the upper hooded petal show some UV-reflection. Pollen is UV-bright.

Equipment [Nikon DX00-broadband + Carl Zeiss 60mm f/4.0 UV-Planar]

Visible Light [f/11 for 4" @ ISO 200 with onboard Flash and Baader UVIR-Block Filter]

Fill flash was used with a long exposure to try to avoid deep shadows.

Ultraviolet Light [f/11 for 25" @ ISO XXX with SB-14 UV-modified Flash and Baader UV-Pass Filter]

A long exposure was taken so that the UV flash could be used multiple times for more even lighting.
