Andrea B.
Blum, A. G. (2014) Euphrasia nemorosa (Pers.) Wallr. (Orobanchaceae) Common Eyebright. Flowers photographed in ultraviolet and visible light. http://www.ultravioletphotography.com/content/index.php?/topic/938-euphrasia-nemorosa-common-eyebright/ Southwest Harbor, Maine, USA14 July 2014Wildflower Synonyms:Euphrasia americana Wettst.Euphrasia canadensis, in the sense of FernaldEuphrasia officinalis L. var. nemorosa Pers.Comment:Key points of identification for E. nemorosa are the non-ascending planarity of the bristle-tipped leaves relative to the stem and the slightly spreading, but non-ascending leaf tips. Flower colour can vary on the same plant, apparently with age. The Euphrasia genus is one of those interesting semi-parasitic groups which can feed on nearby grasses with their elaborate root structure but can still practice photosynthesis as needed. In Ultraviolet light the lower flower lip has a distinct UV-black blotch emanating in pointed rays from the throat. The UV-dark rays track the Visible dark lines on the flower. The UV-dark central area lies against a moderately UV-dark petal background. The reproductive parts in the upper hooded petal show some UV-reflection. Pollen is UV-bright. Reference:1.
