Andrea B.
Blum, A.G. (2017) Solanum carolinense L. (Solanaceae) Horsenettle. Flowers photographed in ultraviolet, visible light, infrared, UV+Blue+Green light http://www.ultraviol...e-horse-nettle/ Updated: 26 August 2017. New set added. Other Common Names:Carolina HorsenettleCarolina NightshadeComment: Horsenettle is one of the many toxic members of the Nightshade family (Solanaceae) which also includes the two human food plants, tomato and potato. Found everywhere in the US, Solanum carolinense is considered a noxious weed which is hard to remove manually because of its sharp spines. One rather beat-up specimen below was found at the edge of a corn field. Another large stand of S. carolinense was found in a park area left to grow naturally to provide habitat for animals and insects. In UV the corolla exhibits a UV-dark center star with UV-bright rays along the petal midrib. The petals are moderately UV-dark. The anthers, which release pollen through their top pores, are UV-black. The conical cells are more evident in one of the Visible photos. Reference:1. Newcomb, L. (1977) Horse Nettle, page 216.
