Twin Pines, La Plata County, Colorado, USA

28 April 2013

Wildflower

Synonyms:

  • Meadow Death Camas
  • Zigadenus venenosus S. Watson
  • formerly in family Liliaceae

Comment:

The T. veneosum, a monocot with onion-like bulbs containing the neurotoxin zygacine in all parts of the plant, was formerly placed in the family Liliaceae. The racemose flower spike distinguishes T. veneosum from T. paniculatus.

In the UV the moderately UV-absorbing sepals show a small UV-bright patch at their base and UV-dark filaments.
