The lax stems carry lateral inflorescences with numberous white flowers, the corolla of which is striped purple on the banner. Flowering is in June or July. V. sylvatica is often found along forest edges, open meadows, or road verges. The stems can be several metres long so the species is easy to spot even from a passing car.
