It is found near urban areas, in meadows, along roads or open forests. It thrives also in quite shaded habitats. The related species, Geum rivale (Water Avens), frequently grows near stands of G. urbanum and the hybrid between the two is not uncommon. Specimen collected near Oslo, Norway 13 June 2012.
