each pebble its part

for the fells’ late spring.

Dance tiptoe, bull,

black against may.

Ridiculous and lovely

chase hurdling shadows

morning into noon.

May on the bull’s hide

and through the dale

furrows fill with may,

 

paving the slowworm’s way
