The Glassberg Turtles

On the west side of St. Louis between Oakland Avenue and Interstate 64 lies a park with a curious attraction: a collection of cement sculptures including giant likenesses of several species of turtle, paid for by a local family named Glassberg. Several of the pieces are from 4 to 8 meters in length--much larger than life-sized. As my family stayed in this area over Thanksgiving, I had the opportunity to walk over into the area and take some UV photos of the sculptures.

This subject matter did not prove to reveal anything major under UV, but there are some minor details noted.

 

Except as otherwise indicated, photos were taken with the Sony A900 at ISO 100 and the Baader U2 filter mounted on the Steinheil Cassar-S at f/16. Display intent is BGR.

The front leg seems to be of a different material than the body here.

A different cement coloration is apparent for the head of the sculpture relative to the rest of the piece.

I was trying for a more dramatic angle here. There was considerable trouble with some sort of flare in this frame and it is possible that the filter requires maintenance. The reflective sheen is well brought out.

This has indeed got to be one of the stranger parks in the world!

I really like these turtles though. Thanks for showing them to us.

 

Probably flare just from directly facing the light?
