CaruelCarum podagraria (L.) RothOther Common Names:GoutweedGround ElderComment:Given its classic umbellifer structure, at first glance this rampant weed growing in the area around Shore Cottage in Maine might be mistaken for its cousin Queen's Anne Lace. However, details of the stem, the leaves, the individual florets and the growth habit quickly reveal the pesky A. podagraria. Like the other Apiaceae presented in this section, the flower does not have much drama in its UV pattern. But the subtle details are worth noting - tiny conical cells giving the petals a bit of iridescent sheen, narrow bright edging around the curled petals. This particular specimen also sports an anomalous false blue petal on one of the hundreds of florets. Reference:1. New England Wild Flower Society (acc 24 Oct 2017) Aegopodium podagraria L.
