Karl Ferris's account of shooting that album cover is a hoot to read, although you would never guess from it what he actually did--he made it sound as if he invented some secret technique with mystical powers, when the actual photo looks like a fairly bog-standard EIR shot (albeit well posed and executed.) The greenish face on the one man makes me think of motion sickness, however...

Bob, I've been back to look at the 5th one down a few times. It is very surreal and has a perfect balance of black and white. And woo is that 14-24 ever sharp.

(Greys too, of course.)

Bob is a very good photographer. He really has an eye... I like what Bob does with the 8mm and 14-24mm lenses.

I have to wonder how many of these lenses have sold recently because of Bob's photos.

These definitely are some of the most surreal photos he has done.

My favorite is the 6th one down, the "gate".

Agreed. I have to say, not all of the surrealness is Bob: the location itself is frankly pretty surreal! And Hammond loved that; that castle is basically an ode to European romanticism. It has secret passages, rooms with hidden doorways so you can't see how to get out, portraits you can spy on people through, Roman gravestones in the walls, 16th century furnishings, a Great Hall, the whole nine yards! Hammond conducted seances in the Great Hall, of course.

Andrea, YES, you must go! Hammond must have wanted to be a card-carrying mad scientist when he grew up, because he lived every trope. He didn't have laser beams to play with, but he worked on radar, and remote-controled submarines, and a whole lot of other stuff. The castle itself is rather interesting, because it's beautiful, but also because it bears a strong resemblance to the Isabella Steward Gardner museum, and I doubt this is coincidence because they were good friends with a common interest in collecting art and antiques. Hammond also held house parties for his friends, on whom he was notorious for playing practical jokes. The castle had an indoor weather system, and on occasion, he surprised them with an indoor rainstorm!
