An Asian species cultivated as a decorative garden plant and occasionally naturalised from garden escapes.

 

Plant collected and photographed near Oslo, Norway.

Ultraviolet light: Nikon D200, Coastal Optics 60 mm f/4 APO, Baader U 2" (Venus) filter, SB-140 flash.

 

P. atrosanguinea appears dark in UV. However petals are clearly differentiated with darker basal spots and brighter tips with presence of conical cells. Iridescence can be seen as well. Bracts are UV bright.
